Beware of the pink and blue unicorns

Greetings.

Jewish date:  23 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holidays:  Monday of the Eleventh Week of Ordinary Time.

Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is “Charlie the Unicorn 3”.

Frankly, I have no idea why Charlie does not flee at the sight of the pink and blue unicorns.  I am expecting that if there is a “Charlie the Unicorn 4”, Charlie will be going crazy with a chainsaw.  Enjoy and share the weirdness.

Beware of bad music

Greetings.

Jewish date:  22 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holiday:  Corpus Christi.  (I have two iCal calendars giving different days for this holiday.  Go figure.)

Today’s quasi-holidays:  Family History Day, World Blood Donor Day, Flag Day.

Worthy cause of the day:  “Water for the World”, “Tell your senators: Support a Strong Public Healthcare Option”, and “Tell NMFS to Protect Sea Turtles”.

Today’s news and commentary:
Personal weirdness:  Over here in Charleston, we have a plant growing in one of the rain gutters of our house, shown in this photograph I took last week:
So far this plant has resisted two attempts to remove it with long-distance gripping tools.  If we are going to remove it, someone is going to have to going to have to use a ladder.  Somehow I am expecting the plant to have another trick up its (metaphorical) sleeve...

Today’s weird thing is “U know how they compared your playing”:
funny pictures of cats with captions
What I have trouble understanding is how the cat got into the guitar.  Enjoy and share the weirdness.

Beware of James T. Kirk dancing

Greetings.

Jewish date:  20 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holiday:  Friday of the Tenth Week of Ordinary Time.

Today’s quasi-holidays:  Crowded Nest Awareness Day, Magic Day, World Day Against Child Labour.

Worthy causes of the day:  “Protect Our Children - Every One Deserves Healthcare” and “Sign the Strengthen It Now! Clean Energy Letter”.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. “Egypt: Policemen Sentenced To Only Five Years For Killing”:  Translation:  the law in Egypt considers the lives of Copts to be worth very little.
  2. “Court Says Ten Commandments Monument Endorses Religion”:  Duh!
  3. More religious intolerance:  “Ahmadiyah refugees kept in misery, seek Jakarta help”, “Orissa: tensions in Kandhamal. Christians still targeted by extremists”.
  4. “Tribes lose Snowbowl battle”:  Thus is it written:

Would artificial snow made from purified wastewater defile a mountain Native Americans hold sacred?
All those who cannot see how “yes” would be a reasonable answer, stand on your heads.  The idea of skiing on sacred mountains is itself hard enough to imagine.
Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is The James T. Kirk Macarena Page, which is recommended(?) by William Shatner in his book Get a Life.  They even quote him on it.  Enjoy (or be horrified), share the weirdness, and Shabbath shalom.

Beware of snipes

Greetings.

Jewish date:  19 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holidays:  Corpus Christi.

Today’s quasi-holidays:  Swimming Pool Day.

Worthy cause of the day:  “Stop domestic right wing terrorists from getting guns.”

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:  “Are Dog Breeds Actually Different Species?”:  Creationists ought to find this annoying.  Creationists often claim that speciation is impossible.  This article argues it has happened in human history.

Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is the snipe hunt, which I cannot recommend you attempt at home.  Enjoy and share the weirdness.

Urban construction

Greetings.

Jewish date:  18 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holidays:  Wednesday of the Tenth Week of Ordinary Time, Feast Day of Basilides.

Worthy causes of the day:  “Tell the EPA to create strong regulations for greenhouse gases”, “Will Dell & HP help China censor the Dalai Lama?”, and “Fix the U.S. Food Safety System Now!”

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. More religious intolerance (which never seems to stop; does it?):  “Somali rage at grave desecration”, “UZBEKISTAN: Appeals by prisoners of conscience rejected”, “UZBEKISTAN: Enormous fines for religious activity continue”, “TURKMENISTAN: Conscientious objectors jailed”
  2. “The Muslim World”:  This is a commentary on how Islam is treated differently from Christianity and Judaism, especially how it gets an unusual amount of respect.
  3. “Tuition crisis can be solved only with vouchers”:  R. Boteach argues for school vouchers to make it easier for Jewish parents to send their children to religious day schools.  I do not see this as a true separation of church and state issue.  No one is advocating that children be forced to go to any religious day school against their parents’ will.  Rather this helps give parents the choice of where to send their children for an education.  It does seem unfair for parents to support public schools when their children are going to parochial schools.
Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is “MATERIAL USED TO BUILD THIS CITY”:

Beware of John Wilkins

Greetings.

Jewish date:  17 Siwan 5769.

Worthy cause of the day:  “Strengthen the clean energy bill”.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. Strange, but historically precedented, form of religious oppression:  “Pakistan: Muslim Forces 12-Year-Old Girl To Convert, Marry Him”.  Please note the persistent lying and excuse-making on the part of the Muslims in this drama, including the demand that the Christian mother work for a year for the kidnapper in order to get her daughter back.
  2. More countries acting shamefully with regard to freedom of religion:  “AZERBAIJAN: Repressive new Religion Law and new punishments enter into force”, “Catholic convent demolished in Vietnam”, “RUSSIA: Widespread protests at new 'Inquisition'”
  3. “Vatican visits CERN's Big Bang machine”:  Despite some worrisome behavior on the part of the current pope, Roman Catholic Church still seems to adhere to Pope John Paul II’s pro-science belief that “truth cannot contradict truth”.  Such an attitude is very sensible.  If there is a creator god, then that god is responsible directly for the laws of physics and indirectly for everything that is a consequence of those laws.  As such, the results of quality scientific research may thus be said to emanate from the Divine Will and thus not to be lightly dismissed.
Today’s news and commentary:

Greetings.

Jewish date:  13 Siwan 5769.

Today’s quasi-holiday:  World Environment Day.

Worthy cause of the day:  “Stand with Obama: Support a Public Health Insurance Option” and “Tell Sarah Palin: Don't Reject Energy Efficiency Funds!”

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. More intolerance:  “Ahmadiyah mosque fire was arson, say police”.
  2. “Church's cash handout part of `faith stimulus'”:  This is an interesting tactic.  There is more to charity/ṣedhaqah than merely dropping money in a box, jar, or basket.  Giving the congregants money to give to people in need themselves helps get them into directly helping other people.
  3. Pointless governmental bureaucracy getting in the way of freedom of religion:  “SD County: Couple needs permit to hold Bible study at home”.
  4. “FOUR LOLCATS”
funny pictures of cats with captions
This, of course, is a joke.  However, I know that the association between black cats and evil goes back long before Basement Cat and LOLcats in general.  Does anyone out there have any idea how this idea got started?

Movie Review:  Idiocracy (2006)
4/4 Stars
WARNING:  SPOILER ALERT!
Few people in the United States actually understand evolution.  Coverage of the topic is spotty in public education and many people, often fundamentalist Christians, vocally oppose any decent discussion of the topic.  Science fiction might be a venue for discussing the topic but generally fails in this respect.  For example, Mimic (1997) had the intriguing concept of insects evolving into something which resembles humans but failed to give any reason for why they would do so.  It’s little wonder that perhaps the greatest popularizer of evolution in recent years has been the late Stephen Jay Gould; he’s had little competition.
It is therefore surprising that one of the best movies to deal with evolution in recent years is Idiocracy.  One of the writers is Mike Judge (creator of Beavis and Butt-head) and the premise is disturbingly simple.  Intelligent people tend to have few children, while stupid people tend to have many children.  As a result, over successive generations, the population tends to have an increasingly large proportion of stupid people.  The protagonist of the film is put into an experimental hibernation chamber, and when he awakes 500 years later, the level of intelligence in the population has dropped to the point where he is the smartest person on the planet.
The premise makes an excellent starting point for discussing the basic principles of evolution.  Any decent discussion will note four principles:
1) variation (organisms are different from each other)
2) selection (the environment makes it more likely for some organisms to survive than others)
3) reproduction (organisms make more organisms and pass on their characteristics)
4) mutation (new characteristics sometimes appear)
Mutation was not addressed in the film, but the others were.  The film notes that humans vary quite a bit on an important characteristic:  intelligence.  In earlier times, intelligence was important for survival and success in the environment; people who could not adapt to its challenges would die and have fewer children.  However, in the current situation, there environment humans live in has been restructured so intelligence is no longer as important.  People who earlier would have been easy prey would now survive.  In other words, the selective pressures that favored intelligence no longer exist.  (Something similar happens to the Eloi in H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine.)  And, as these less-intelligent people also reproduced more, the conclusion naturally follows that in the future humans will be much stupider.
That’s not to say that our species actually is doomed to stupidity.  The premise can be reasonably disputed at every point.  One serious objection (which has been hotly debated in psychology) is over how genetically based intelligence is.  Obviously there is some genetic basis; humans are genetically different from other species and no other species is known to have the same intellectual abilities as humans.  However, “intelligence” is a broad, poorly defined term, and much of what it covers may be strongly influenced by the environment.  Furthermore, the movie depicts the society propped up with technology that allows people to continue functioning despite their stupidity.  (For example, there is a scene at a hospital where the person manning the admissions desk at a hospital merely presses a button with a picture on it to record the medical issue, much like orders are taken at some fast-food restaurants.)  Arguably as humans get stupider, technology
will ultimately fail and intelligence will once again be selected for because all the stupid people will starve and die.  Indeed, the movie may be argued to be making this point as, because of their stupidity, the future humans are shown threatening their own existence.  Even the relationship between intelligence and number of children may be disputed, and in some countries which properly support people having children (e.g., Israel), people with greater education may actually be the ones having more children.  Regardless, even these questionable points are housed within a decent understanding of evolution and may make an excellent starting point from which to discuss the topic.
If you haven’t heard of this movie, you shouldn’t be surprised as it was barely promoted.  The connection with evolution probably was not the reason as the word “evolution” does not occur in the movie and it’s not likely people who don’t understand evolution in the first place (most people) would recognize it anyway.  More likely is the movie’s highly critical tone towards commercialism and popular culture.  The future culture is the worst of today’s taken to its logical conclusion, with everyone becoming vulgar and profane and interested mostly in sex and immediate pleasures.  Popular entertainment is degenerated to its lowest forms, not only outright pornography, but also plotless suffering and crudity (there is a program with nothing but a man being repeatedly hurt in a manner popular in clips on America’s Funniest Home Videos, as well as an award-winning movie which consists only of a single, long shot of someone’s buttocks).  Commercialism has run rampant, including advertisements being prominently displayed in the House of Representatives.  The warping of real life to commercial interests becomes so dangerous that it becomes an important plot point when it threatens human life itself.  Everything, of course, is played for laughs, but the satire is of a deep and biting nature, something of the order of what’s found in Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal.”  It’s not hard to see some humorless executives somewhere, seeing their reason for being mercilessly attacked, resulting in a few polite phone calls and  only those actions absolutely required by contracts being done to promote the film.
And that’s a pity.  Most of what passes for satire these days is not.  There’s certainly a lot of “parodies” out there with a lot of profanity and stupid stuff in them, usually with “Movie” in the title, and none of them are worth anything.  Idiocracy certainly has its share of vulgarity, but to a very different effect.  It rails against crudeness and  shows vividly the results of stupidity, making the argument against them with both intelligence and humor.  And it is extremely funny, with lots of laughs coming from genuinely funny situations instead of the “shock” laughs common in the “Movie” movies.  Prudish people may be reasonably concerned about a movie in which the name of the restaurant Fuddruckers morphs over time into a rather obvious profanity, but for an amazingly smart film that is actually food for thought, it is more than worth it.  See this film immediately.

Worthy cause of the day:  “Support the U.S.'s Decision to Join the UN Human Rights Council” and “Put a People-Powered Internet First”.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. “Drought-hit India's frog wedding”:  I could have easily made this today’s weird thing, because I have no clue why a Hindu rain god would be appeased by a wedding for two frogs.  Then again, arguably what any god wants is somewhat arbitrary.  A real deity (one not of our universe) would have no physical need for anything we could provide.  As such, anything a real deity would find meritorious would have to fall into other categories, such as wisdom, inculcation of proper behavior, or beauty.  Intuition suggests that the last alternative, that the rain god is supposed to enjoy frogs getting married, is the most likely.  (Any Hindu or otherwise properly knowledgeable person reading this, please let me know if I am wrong.)
  2. Some countries never learn anything about freedom of religion:  “KYRGYZSTAN: Crackdown follows new Religion Law”.
  3. “US cancer teen 'to get treatment'”:  Just in case you did not hear about this on the news.  Daniel Hauser, the boy with Hodgkin’s lymphoma who turned down chemotherapy for religious reasons, and his mother are no longer on the run.  Daniel is now getting proper treatment.

Today’s weird thing was provided for me by a masked man with a machine gun and included below.  Enjoy and share the weirdness.

From:  James McCullen XXIV, Military Arms Research Syndicate
To:  Everyone
To whom it may concern:
Once again my good name is being defamed, and I am getting pretty tired of it.  Yes, I know, every public figure must endure some kind of insults and derision, but this is really too much.  Instead of new action figures or a cartoon series, it’s an all-new movie, and I am once again being portrayed as the villain.
G. I. Joe:  The Rise of Cobra, what a tacky name.  That’s a mere step above that of another upcoming and probably equally insipid film, Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen.  They might as well chosen something more fitting such as Lapses of Sense and Things Blowing Up.  That’s the level this thing will be at if the trailer tells right.  Let me give you an overview based on the bloody thing.
Myself, played by Christopher Eccleston (brilliant in Doctor Who but doesn’t look or sound a thing like me) looks a bit peeved as I say “When I’m finished, this world will never forget,” and then things happen.  There are lapses of sense and things blowing up.  Some sort of fictitious acid eats away the whole Eiffel Tower.  Things blow up.  Sienna Miller, playing my wife Anastasia, keeps appearing as things blow up.  A bunch of people assemble to deal with the threat of Sienna Miller and things blowing up.  They have special “accelerator suits” which turn them into superheroes.  And so the battle begins to save something or other.
I can’t understate how much of a nutter whoever made this piece of tripe is.  Forget the acid and the accelerator suits.  The personal attacks are really too much.  I am an honest business men, nothing more, certainly not a terrorist.  And my wife, she does not go running about wearing a skin-tight leather jumpsuit in public.  Though not in the trailer, I don’t look forward to the inevitable shot of Christopher Eccleston in a steel mask.  These are things which are odd and improper and we simply do not go out wearing.  As for what we do in the privacy of our own home, that is no one else’s business.  The smears against us have been very trying on our family, and I do not care for what this will do to our grandchildren.  The past few decades have been very trying with children and grandchildren asking for everything from rides on giant larvae to help in creating a new headmaster in school from the DNA of much better tutors.  Enough is enough.
There is also the larger issue of the depiction of terrorism.  On neither side of the pond does anyone with the least involvement in politics seem to have the slightest understanding of terrorists. and whay they do what they do.  Here in Britain they seem happy to appease the unfriendlies and let them into our country.  America is no better.  You have the Republicans (Fascists) who are either simplistically for or against something, quite willing to bomb anyone who is currently against them and send the children of the poor in to die so long as they get rich off the whole affair.  They’re willing to overlook any atrocities so long as they are done by someone on their side.  And then you have the Democrats (Socialists), who would rather talk things over and assume everyone else is rational and wants peace no matter how obviously crazy they are.  They’re also willing to overlook any atrocities so long as they are done by someone on their side.  To the Socialists, the issue is always about economics or some kind of misunderstanding, while the Fascists always say the terrorists hate freedom and liberty (even through the Fascists themselves are great enemies of freedom of liberty).
Poppycock.
Let us take the very real terrorist organization that is Cobra.  They are not “haters of freedom and liberty” any more than the Fascists.  Actually they very much enjoy it, at least so far as it serves them.  Like the Fascists, they completely oppose it for anyone who opposes them, of course.  Simply treating them as “bad guys” never deals with what about them makes them “bad.”  Yes, they kill people, but so the soldiers of the so-called free world.  Indeed, killing Cobra soldiers is often followed by others joining Cobra and going out to kill people themselves, “radicalizing” it’s called.  Nor do they really want peace or a particular piece of territory or anything like that.  Of course, they say they do, but once they get these things, are they ever satisfied?  Certainly not.  They walk away from treaties or simply ignore them and go right back to exactly what they were doing.
What no one seems to understand is that Cobra is not merely a terrorist organization, but a religious one as well.  They have definite beliefs about their place in the universe and how everyone else fits into it.  People outside of Cobra are not merely inferior, but subhuman, they same way European-Americans used to regard their African slaves.  By dominating these subhumans, the Cobraists do their religious duty and receive their eternal reward.  It is madness, of course, but more shocking still is the madness of those dealing with them.
Citing any religious reason for terrorism is politically incorrect.  The Fascists themselves make religious appeals and don’t want to portray religion as a bad thing.  The Socialists try to acknowledge and value everyone’s differences, holding them as all equally valid, no matter how hateful, offensive, or backwards they are.  And so no one will acknowledge what should be obvious, and no one does anything to address the real problem.  Indeed, they encourage those who have to deal with Cobra firsthand to try to compromise, make deals, or otherwise commit suicide.
No one with any sense tries to compromise with someone with no respect for you.  You don’t ask for a timeout from the madman with a butcher knife or make nice with your rapist.  All the free world has gained from this approach is making itself look weak and stupid, because it is weak and stupid.  Is it any wonder that Cobra keeps coming back, spilling blood, blowing things up, all the while blaming the free world for its actions?  You bloody imbeciles, by not dealing with Cobra as it really is, you‘re damn right you are responsible.
True enough, I am a weapons dealer, and I sell quite happily to Cobra.  I sell to you as well, anyone really.  As I’ve said, you’re all quite mad, so there really is no difference.  I can’t change you, and you’re all going to blow each other up in the end, so why fight it?  You want to make each other dead for stupid reasons, fine with me, it’s not like world gives one whit about anything they say is really important.  I’m just going to sit back, and if things get really bad, I got myself one nice cozy bunker to wait it out.  Enjoy.
Let’s see you address that in your stupid movie.

Beware of Captain Kirk

Greetings.

Jewish date:  10 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holidays:

Today’s quasi-holidays:

Worthy cause of the day: “Silence Is The Enemy” (with some detail of the problem in “After Wars, Mass Rapes Persist”), “224,900% increase in Solar Energy by 2020?”, and “Support Health Research That Fuels Hope”.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. “Scientology CEO Outraged About Wikipedia ”:  This is a delusional rant from the Church of Scientology’s CEO David Miscavige, who is very upset that Wikipedia will not allow Scientologists to edit articles about themselves to show them only in a positive light.  The level of paranoia should be an indication that Mr. Miscavige is probably not the right person to be editing anything in a public forum.  E.g.:

"The goal of Scientology is a sane world, without criminals, without psychiatric terror, without war. Ultimately, the goal of Scientology is sanity itself. Only the insane would attempt to stop Scientology. With this brutal decision, not only is Wikipedia criminally attacking the world's most ethical people, members of the Scientology religion, but it is preventing Scientologists from presenting our religion in the most positive and truthful light. There is so much nonsense on the internet about Scientology, all of which was written by anti-religion extremists in the employ of the Psychiatric-Pharmaceutical industry. Many are also being paid by certain depraved, degenerate factions within the German government. You can't believe any of it. If these scumbags had their way, all children would be psych-drugged into oblivion, most eventually becoming high school gunmen; vicious de-programmers would constantly be leaping out from shadowy corners; there would be all-night electroshock parlors on the high street of every village, town and city; and anyone who tried to live an ethical life would quickly receive an icepick lobotomy. This is why it is necessary for Scientologists to try to present a balanced perspective, by showcasing all the good things about the Scientology religion, and removing all the lies."
Please note the delusion that Scientology is ethical (which is only true if one assumes that the people in charge of the religion are better than everyone else and are entitled to exploit everyone else, including their own membership), the delusion that Scientologists should have a monopoly on how Scientology is depicted (freedom of speech violation), the delusion that everyone speaking up against anti-Scientology on the Internet is an “anti-religion extremist” working for psychiatrists and drug companies and the German government, and the delusion that the Church of Scientology is the only thing preventing the planet from going to Hell.  My favorite line in the whole rant is:

As members of a minority religion, Scientologists deserve to be treated fairly, which means that we should be allowed to do things that other groups may not do.
This, of course, is the opposite of what “fairly” actually means.  Thank you, Mr. Miscavige, for giving the good folks of Anonymous a very easy target.
  2. Considering the bad behavior that Mr. Miscavige and other Scientologists try to cover up, stories like this one should be no surprise:  “Norwegian government considers prosecuting Scientology”.
  3. “We’re not rebels, Catholic splinter group says”:  Here we have in Kenya a breakaway group from the Roman Catholic Church, not following all the rules of the Roman Catholic Church, but demanding recognition and respect from the Roman Catholic Church.  This is a group under the delusion that acceptance is a right, not a privilege.  Bad idea.
  4. “Would Jesus oppose gays and be silent on porn?”:  Rabbi Boteach is right; there is a lot more to Christianity than just opposition to homosexuality.  If Christians really want to save heterosexual marriage, they have to do something which helps marriages in trouble rather than attack people who are not part of the problem.  The fact that there is more to Christianity than opposition to homosexual marriages is rightly recognized by Christians themselves in “Standstill Continues at Liberty University Over Ouster of College Democrats”.
Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is Punch Captain Kirk, which was recommended (or at least noted as weird) by William Shatner himself in his book Get a Life.  I suspect the person who created this pointless exercise was more of a Captain Picard fan.  Enjoy, share the weirdness, and don’t be too hard on Captain Kirk.

Job application stupidity of the day, part 2

Greetings.

Whoever created this job-application form is even lamer than I thought.  The name of the cover letter file is limited to 50 characters.  What kind of demented mind comes up with such a pointless limitation.  Long file names now and forever!!!

(Yes, I need a chill pill...)

Job application stupidity of the day

Greetings.

The job application site I am trying to submit to now was designed very carelessly:
  1. Asking for the resume more than once is pointless. Asking for information once should be enough.
  2. Asking for the resume and for information which is practically guaranteed to be in the resume is pointless. As mentioned previously, asking for information once should be enough.
  3. Claiming to “populate” a form from the submitted resume and failing to do so is pointless. Not to mention this is a great way to annoy applicants.
All in all, I am getting very annoyed very fast, and I am starting to use words such as “idiots” to describe whoever put these forms together. Whoever is responsible has zero respect for applicants and is thus probably deterring perfectly qualified people from applying at all. Remember, people: when hiring, you always want to hire people who will do a good job when they are hired, not people who will do a good job filling out your forms. Do not try to rationalize your way around this; human resources exists for the benefit of the rest of the company, not the other way around.

If anyone in human resources is reading this, have some commonsense and hire me to critique your job application forms. If I am going to complain about your forms, I might as well be paid to do it privately so you can quietly fix your problems quietly and with dignity rather than have people like me rant about them on the Internet.

Thank you for your patience.

Beware of zombies

Greetings.

Jewish date: 9 Siwan 5769.

Today’s quasi-holidays: Doughnut Day, International Children’s Day.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. “Wikipedia bans Church of Scientology”: Considering that the Church of Scientology is known to play dirty PR tricks, it is not surprising that the Church of Scientology would illegitimately edit Scientology-related articles to eliminate negative criticism. I cannot blame Wikipedia for instituting a ban on edits from all Church of Scientology computers.
  2. “Doctor who performed abortions shot to death”: While I can appreciate killing the unborn is considered immoral by many, I fail to see how killing a doctor who performs abortions will help. Those seeking an abortion will just go to another doctor. Also this is an extralegal killing in a non-emergency situation, without a fair trial or a chance for the accused to defend himself, i.e., murder. Not to mention it does not seem appropriate to kill someone in church, when he is most certainly not about to perform an abortion.

funny pictures of cats with captions
Yes, this is most definitely a joke.  However, I am still fuzzy on the origin of this notion of “harvesting souls”.
  2. “Twilight series spawns religion: Edward Cullen is real, members should read the books like a Bible”:  This is also a joke (probably).  I am not clear on what the point of a parody/joke religion based on a series of novels about vampires is, especially when it takes the position that the novels are an accurate depiction of reality, yet deifies characters who are merely human or vampire.  For an example of a parody religion which actually makes sense, please see the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the purpose of which is to expose the sloppy thinking and dishonest tactics of creationism.  Remember, creators of parody religions, self-consistency and a clear goal count.
  3. “Trouble Brewing for AIG and Federal Government; Challenge of AIG Bailout Allowed to Proceed”:  Here we have a clear problem of separation of church and state, not to mention aiding and abetting the enemy.  AIG, which has received government bailout money, is into shari‘a-compliant financing, which involves giving to Muslim causes—including funding terrorism.

Beware of wannabe Starfleet personnel

Greetings.

Jewish date:  5 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holidays:  Day 49 of the ‘Omer (‘Erev Shavu‘oth), Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter.

Note:  Tomorrow is Shavu‘oth, a major Jewish holiday which commemorates the Divine revelation on Mount Sinay.  There will be no blog entry tomorrow.  I do not stay up all night learning (the practice comes from the Zohar), so I get to be more awake than many other people tomorrow.

Today’s quasi-holidays:  Slugs Return from Capistrano Day, National Hamburger Day, Whale Day.

Worthy causes of the day:  “Will Your Representative Help Sea Otters?”, “Allow Seniors the Choice of Independent Living”, and “Don't Let Walmart Cut Corners on store security”.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:  “How Bad Is The Day School Crisis?”:  Something that has to be resolved.  Jewish children need a good Jewish education, but the costs have to be something that parents can afford.

Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing, submitted by Barry, is Real Tricorders.  Enjoy, share the weirdness, live long and prosper, and ḥagh sameaḥ.

I cannot think of a title that would not spoil today’s weird thing

Greetings.

Jewish date: 4 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holiday: Day 48 of the ‘Omer.

Today’s quasi-holiday: National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

Worthy causes of the day: “Museums are Essential to Our National Heritage” and “Is Rush Limbaugh the voice of the Republican Party?”

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. “Revelation denied: The scandal of Jewish ignorance”: Few people value anything they know little or nothing about. That is a major reason for the Divine Misconceptions project. I like the idea of more and better-done Jewish movies. (I wonder what a film about the Vilna Ga’on would be like...)
  2. “Sect members accused of denying children education”: I have no clue what these people are thinking. I do not recall anywhere in the New Testament where Jesus proclaimed ignorance as being virtuous.
  3. “RUSSIA: A new 'Inquisition'”: Governmental violation of freedom of religion shows its ugly face again.
Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is “GIVE A CAT A FISH”.

PS: I take no responsibility for the consequences if you show this to your cat and it gets any naughty ideas.

Beware of the kids from other schools

Greetings.

Jewish date:  3 Siwan 5769.

Today’s holidays:  Day 47 of the ‘Omer, Feast Day of the Magi: Siddhartha.

Relevant to Divine Misconceptions:
  1. “Growing TV ministry spurs profits, questions”:  Major rule:  Never send money to anyone who claims that those who give him money will financially prosper unless he can prove that he is a genuine prophet.
  2. “we had kum to claim ur sole but teh door wuz”
funny pictures of cats with captions
I know very well this is pure humor and not to be taken seriously.  But where does this notion of soul-stealing or soul-eating black come from?  Intuition suggests a variation on the Faust legend.
  3. “Synagogues Seek Cell Phone Jamming Equipment”:  Frankly, I do not think I have ever heard of a religion where they approve of cell phone use during services.
  4. “Pope 2.0: Vatican launches Facebook application”:  Interesting tactic.
  5. “How Google's cute "doodles" became Satan's pawns”:  Some people read way too much into Google’s logo graphics.
Today’s news and commentary:
Today’s weird thing is “Pep Rally”.
Enjoy and share the weirdness.
